Helpful self-stories |
This core process is the trickiest to explain. But let's give it a go.

ACT sees the idea of the self which is aligned with having a rich, full and meaningful life in a different way.
The term for this is 'the observing self'. This is the part of you which does all the noticing and naming in ACT. Another slightly more difficult term for this is 'self-as-context'. This is distinct from 'self as content' - as illustrated in the first picture above. Don't worry if you're still confused - this is a challenging area. Have a look at the video. |

Here's another one which may help. |
Is this still feeling difficult and confusing? That's 100% fine!
Let's look at this feeling in ACT terms: It is great that you are in touch with what is happening to you right here and now. This is what contact with the present moment is all about. This is a good opportunity to notice and name your thoughts and feelings, to allow them to be there and make room for them. This is what acceptance of experience is all about. If your mind is making comments like "I must be really stupid for not understanding this", you can just notice this thought. You might even thank your mind for trying to keep you safe. You don't need to respond to this thought with another thought or take any other action. This is what having a healthy relationship with your mind is all about. Are you deciding to hang in there because you want to understand something new? This is great and it is underpinned by your values. And by taking the next step even when if feels uncomfortable, you are engaged in committed action. |
