Learn How To Row
For New Rowers
If you’re interested in giving rowing a go at Eskmuthe, we now introduce new rowers gradually through our normal social rowing sessions.
How it works
1. Get in touch
If you’d like to try rowing with Eskmuthe, let us know and we’ll add you to our WhatsApp group for prospective new rowers.
2. Take your first row
We’ll offer occasional opportunities for a prospective new rower to join an existing social row as a sixth seat. You’ll expect to row for around 25–30 minutes as part of a session lasting 60-90 minutes. This gives you the chance to have a go and experience a normal Eskmuthe rowing session.
Places are offered through the WhatsApp group on a first-come, first-served basis, so keep an eye on the group if you’re keen to get out on the water.
3. Decide what you want to do next
After your first try-out, there are three options:
Enjoyed it and got the hang of it? Great - we’ll invite you to join the club.
Found it challenging but keen to try again? No problem - you can stay on the list for another try-out.
Decided rowing isn’t for you? That’s absolutely fine - just leave the group!
You can have a maximum of two try-outs before deciding whether you want to join the club.
Your first three rows are free
New rowers still get three free rows before they need to purchase a rowing card.
If you join after your initial try-out, your next two rows with the club will be free, giving you three free opportunities to try rowing in total.
A couple of things to bear in mind
We expect to offer a sixth seat roughly every 2–3 weeks, depending on the availability of suitable social rows and the weather. If a row is cancelled due to the weather, we will let you know - but sadly this can sometimes happen at the last minute.
If you take a place and then can’t make it, please give us at least 48 hours' notice. A late cancellation or no-show may mean you are removed from the active try-out list.
Please wear footwear that you don't mind getting wet - sailing boots, pool shoes, or old trainers are best. Fingerless cycling gloves are useful to avoid blisters, which new rowers sometimes get. We will provide a life jacket.
