Eskmuthe Crews Excel In Global “5 Miles From Home” Challenge

Eskmuthe Rowing Club took on the world in the international “5 Miles From Home” challenge last week, with nine crews stepping up to the feat of endurance.

The virtual event, involving 98 coastal rowing boats in a range of classes, saw Eskmuthe secure some impressive results on the global stage.

In the provisional overall standings, the Open crew finished 16th and the 50+ crew 17th, an outstanding achievement against seasoned competition.

Of all the St Ayles Skiffs that entered, the Eskmuthe Open Mix came 4th, Eskmuthe 50+ Men came 5th – separated by just 7 seconds, and only 11 seconds off 2nd place.

The fastest time was recorded by Dutch powerhouses Woudrichem, with an amazing 47:01.

After that, the times were super-close:

  • 52:41 Woudrichem

  • 52:42 Nairn

  • 52:45 Eskmuthe

  • 52:52 Eskmuthe

In the Open category (where 27 St Ayles skiffs entered), Eskmuthe Open were runners-up, just three seconds behind Nairn.

And in the 50+ category (25 crews): Eskmuthe claimed 3rd place, chasing the two fast crews from Woudrichem in Holland.

The week-long effort brought together a fantastic mix of rowers, including seasoned racers, development rowers and a spirited under-19s crew. Eskmuthe’s entries were:

  • 50+ Men: Brian, Richard,  David L, Damian (cox Charly)

  • Open Women: Gaynor, Sarah C, Katie, Yasmin (cox Fox)

  • 50+ Women: Veronica, Sandra, Pauline, Jane (cox Stewart)

  • 50+ Mixed: Fox, David L, Damian, Wendy (cox Sandra)

  • Open Men: Bobby, Adam S, Stuart D, Niall (cox David L)

  • Development crew: Freya, Sandra, Sarah C, Rhona (cox Simon)

  • Open Mixed: Kari Ann, Josh, Simon, Amie (cox Veronica)

  • Under-19s: Rona, Logan, Adam W, Lily (cox Gaynor)

  • Open Mixed: Mike, Logan, Pete, Rebecca (cox Amie)

Club Chair, Simon Francis, said:

“To have nine crews out, across such a range of categories, and to come away with top-five placings is a brilliant reflection of how far the club has come.  Conditions throughout the week varied, ranging from blazing sun to howling winds. One crew even rowed well past sunset.”

“With margins as close as three seconds over five miles, every stroke really counted.”

The organisers will confirm the results and the winning crew, which, uniquely for this contest, is the crew that finishes with the median time in due course. Follow their Facebook page for more:
