I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1992. I have since worked with people with complex mental health problems, people with acquired brain injury, and people living with dementia.
One gorgeous day in June 2014 I went down to Portobello beach to see an old friend who had started rowing. I had no idea what it was all about. I was excited and delighted by what I saw, and made a promise to myself to get involved. This was before I moved to Musselburgh and I didn't know about Eskmuthe. Of course I took pictures and have ones of Honesty and some Eskmuthe folk - see above.
It took another two and half years before I joined up during which time I made a lot of big and very necessary changes in my life. The memory of all those boats, people, dogs and claxons helped me along the way.
ACT, which is the main approach I describe in SkiffiePsych, has been an essential part of getting to this point, so I speak from experience not only as a psychologist but as a human being toiling away with what life throws at us!
I am not a sports psychologist and although I have worked with lots of groups, I haven't done this with a group of people with an interest in common. So, this is an experiment, and I hope you will join me in a spirit of openness and curiosity in exploring together whether psychology and rowing are a good mix!
